Earth Science
Arcadia's elementary schools use the Scott Foresman science textbook and
Linda Poore's hands-on science program. Science kits make it possible for
our students to do hands-on investigations. Together with online resources
and United Streaming, students are provided with excellent support, thereby
making science loads of fun and concepts easier to grasp.

Rock Types: Exploring
Igneous Rocks
Investigating Pet Rocks
We're putting our pet
rocks to the test by investigating their properties including: color, luster,
weight, streak color, cleavage, volume, and hardness.
Each student brought
a rock to school. We
called them our "pet rocks."
They visited for several
days as we investigated
their properties in order
to identify them.

The Hardness Test
We are investigating the
hardness of minerals. Testing a mineral's hardness helps to identify it.
We were able to deduce where the minerals fell on the Mohs Scale.
We relied on our
fingernail, a penny,
a steel nail, and
a glass jar to
determine if a
mineral is soft
or hard.

Testing for Streak Color
We are investigating the
streak colors of minerals. Testing a mineral's streak helps to identify
it.
Direct Inquiry: Minerals
We are investigating
minerals and learning about their properties.
