The kindergarten year begins with an orientation the day before school starts. At this orientation, students and parents meet their teacher for the coming year as well as become familiar with the classroom
Academically, our minimum goal is that all students know their shapes, colors, letters and sounds, and to recognize the numbers to 30 by the end of the school year. Developing reading and writing skills are also stressed. It is also important that each child be able to rhyme words, be able to discuss a story, and cultivate good work habits.
Students are involved in two student-led conferences during the kindergarten year. The first conference is held in the fall and the second in the spring. During both conferences, students demonstrate to their parents, things that they have learned up to that point in the school year.
It is district policy that each child read or be read to for 15 minutes daily. There is also weekly homework assigned in kindergarten. This homework generally reflects what is being taught in class.
Throughout the school year our students participate in a variety of fun and learning based theme units such as: The Gingerbread Man, western days, ocean days, and Mother Goose. Our students participate in a winter holiday program in December and they go on a field trip to the farm in the spring.
