Dear Parents,

The Arcadia Unified School District has a strong commitment to providing a quality education for its students, including access to and experience with cutting-edge technology. In addition
to providing computers and software to every classroom and school library, the District provides support for integrating technology into the daily curriculum. Use of the Internet is one aspect
of connecting technology, curriculum, classroom instruction, and student learning. The benefits of the Internet as a research and communication tool expand as more and more resources become available on the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, some of the resources accessible via the Internet are inappropriate for student use.

In the past, student access to information has been managed through District selection of printed, recorded or video materials available in schools. On a larger scale, students have access to other libraries, radio, television or other media that are also somewhat regulated by law and community standards. The Internet, however, is unregulated, and open to all types of communication, information, misinformation, propaganda and even pornography. Students
may encounter objectionable material during normal exploration. Others may seek it out. The Arcadia Unified School District has taken several steps to guide student use of the Internet, including installation of blocking software to limit access to inappropriate resources and information. In addition, AUSD provides regular monitoring of student use of the network and appropriate instruction in proper use and evaluation of Internet resources. Finally, the development of district policies and user agreements clarifying expectations and requirements for appropriate and safe use of technological resources will be continually evaluated and revised. However, total control of student access to material on the Internet is not technically feasible due to the nature of the network. It remains essential for students to take responsibility for their use of available technology and technological resources.

It is imperative to establish ethical standards for the use of technology and technological resources in our schools. Students have access to all available technology resources, with guidance and support provided by teachers and staff. Direct instruction will be provided on appropriate and ethical use of these resources; students will sign an Acceptable Use Agreement annually. A copy of this Agreement is included in the school handbook or first day packet for your review. Students who choose to disregard ethical standards, demonstrated either by inappropriate behavior or poor citizenship, will be subject to discipline as outlined in the school’s discipline matrix.

Your signature on the form on the reverse side of this letter indicates that you have reviewed the Acceptable Use Agreement and understand that students will be using technological resources on a daily basis. Also, your signature affirms your understanding that inappropriate use of technology will be dealt with under the terms of the school's discipline matrix for disciplinary action.

Sincerely,
